Scope of services
How can we help?
Proctology consultations, anoscopy and sigmoidoscopy, and procedural treatment of haemorrhoids. The appointments team will confirm the exact scope of the service, required preparation and availability.
The proctology clinic of Centrum Medyczne Skopia in Kraków deals with the prevention and treatment of diseases of the final section of the gastrointestinal tract — the last 15 centimetres, that is the rectum and the anus. The most common conditions of this area are haemorrhoids, inflammatory conditions, fistulas, anal fissures and tumours.
When to come for a consultation
- bleeding from the anus, mucous or purulent discharge
- rectal pain
- incontinence of stool and gas
- itching and burning around the anus
- damage to the skin around the anus
- a feeling of incomplete bowel emptying
- urgency to defecate
How the consultation proceeds
- medical history
- examination in the knee-elbow position or on the side
- external inspection of the perianal area and the anus
- digital rectal examination — assessment of the sphincters and location of lesions
- anoscopy — assessment of the anal canal and the rectal area beyond the sphincters
- if needed, sigmoidoscopy — assessment of the bowel up to about 20–25 cm
A visit to a proctologist does not require any prior preparation.
Haemorrhoids
Every person has haemorrhoidal cushions — together with the sphincter muscles they regulate the passing of stool and gas. They become a problem only once they are stretched and filled with blood beyond measure, and inflammation develops in them.
The symptoms are itching around the anus, damage to the mucous membrane and the skin, a feeling of incomplete bowel emptying and bleeding during defecation; at an advanced stage the haemorrhoid prolapses. Pain appears with inflammatory and thrombotic complications.
The formation of haemorrhoids is favoured by a sedentary lifestyle and a lack of physical activity, a diet low in fibre and a small intake of fluids, constipation, and pregnancy and hormonal changes. People who are obese, people with diarrhoea caused by laxatives, people with chronic circulatory failure, people after operations in the anal and perineal area and people who have anal sex are particularly at risk.
Methods of treating haemorrhoids
- conservative treatment: a change of lifestyle, a diet rich in fibre, regulation of the rhythm of bowel movements and medicines — ointments, suppositories and oral preparations
- the Barron method (rubber band ligation): a rubber band cutting off the blood supply is placed at the base of the haemorrhoid; the haemorrhoid dies off and falls away after several to a dozen or so days, and the procedure is repeated depending on the indications
- foam sclerotherapy: injection of a foam that closes the vessel, in which a clot forms, after which the haemorrhoid falls away
- electrocoagulation
The doctor decides on the method after an examination.
