What does the procedure involve?
Anoscopy at Centrum Medyczne Skopia in Kraków consists in examining the anal canal and the final section of the rectum with a speculum. Unlike colonoscopy, it is performed with rigid specula.
The range of information obtained is narrower than with colonoscopy, but anoscopy cannot be replaced by it: it allows an assessment of the anal canal and the rectal area beyond the sphincters, that is the area that colonoscopy does not cover.
The examination makes it possible to identify haemorrhoids — their number, their degree of advancement and their qualification for treatment — as well as fissures, fistula openings, polyps and hypertrophic papillae of the dentate line. It also makes it possible to locate the sites of bleeding.
Course and preparation
Anoscopy is performed during a proctology consultation, which does not require any prior preparation.
