What does the procedure involve?
Transfontanelle ultrasound at Centrum Medyczne Skopia in Kraków assesses the structures of an infant's brain through the unclosed fontanelle, using ultrasound waves, without X-ray radiation.
The examination is performed by a specialist in radiology and diagnostic imaging. It is possible until the anterior fontanelle closes — most often between the 9th and the 18th month of life.
The assessment covers the ventricular system, the echogenicity of the tissues, the choroid plexuses in the lateral ventricles and the fluid spaces around the brain. The examination takes from a few to a dozen or so minutes.
Indications
- prematurity and low birth weight — an increased risk of intraventricular haemorrhage, damage to the central nervous system and intracranial complications
Course and preparation
No preparation is required.
Before the examination it is recommended to:
- feed the child
- change the child's nappy
- bring the child's health record book and any earlier test results
