Orthopaedic ultrasound
The examination assesses muscles, tendons, ligaments, synovial bursae, periarticular tissues and selected peripheral nerves. It makes it possible to view structures in motion, which is why the doctor may ask the patient to perform specific movements. It takes 15–30 minutes, and a dynamic assessment may extend this time. The result with a report is available immediately after the examination and is discussed with the patient.
No preparation is required. It is worth bringing earlier imaging results (ultrasound, X-ray, magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography) and documentation following an injury or a procedure, and also wearing clothing that is easy to move aside at the area being examined. The examination is not performed at the site of open wounds, ulcerations, fresh burns or extensive skin infections.
