What does the procedure involve?
Cytology at Centrum Medyczne Skopia in Kraków is performed under the cervical cancer prevention programme. The programme covers women aged 25 to 64 who have not had a cytology screening test in the last three years.
A referral is not required — reporting to the community midwife of the primary care clinic is enough. An appointment can be made through the Internetowe Konto Pacjenta (Patient's Internet Account), the mojeIKP application, e-registration, by telephone or at the clinic.
The programme provides for two testing schemes. The traditional scheme is conventional cytology performed every 3 years. The new scheme is an HPV HR test with genotyping, detecting the DNA or RNA of high oncogenic risk human papillomavirus in a cervical swab, performed every 5 years; if the result is positive, liquid-based cytology (LBC) is additionally performed from the same sample, without repeating the swab.
The examination is performed by a doctor or a midwife holding a certificate of the Maria Skłodowska-Curie National Research Institute of Oncology.
Follow-up after the examination: a normal result means the next examination in 3 years, and in justified cases — HIV infection, immunosuppressive treatment or high-risk HPV infection — after 12 months. If dysplastic lesions are found, the patient receives a referral for colposcopy, possibly with a sample taken for histopathological examination.
