Transfontanelle ultrasound in infants
The examination assesses the structures of the brain through the unclosed fontanelle, using ultrasound waves, without X-ray radiation. It is performed by a specialist in radiology and diagnostic imaging. It is possible until the anterior fontanelle closes, most often between the 9th and the 18th month of life.
The assessment covers the ventricular system, the echogenicity of the tissues, the choroid plexuses in the lateral ventricles and the fluid spaces around the brain. The examination takes from a few to a dozen or so minutes. Those most often referred for it are premature babies with a low birth weight, in whom the risk of intraventricular haemorrhage and intracranial complications is increased.
No preparation is required. Before the examination it is worth feeding and changing the child and bringing the health record book and earlier results.
